Landing in Japan: make a connection plan before you fly
Separate internet access from getting a Japanese phone number. If your immediate tasks are maps, messaging and finding your accommodation, you may be able to solve those before your longer-term voice plan is ready.
Before departure
Choose a temporary connection if you need one. Compare your existing roaming allowance with a data-only option. Check compatibility, validity dates and when charging or validity starts. Do not assume an eSIM labelled for Japan includes a Japanese voice number or SMS.
Save the essentials offline. Keep your accommodation address, directions, booking confirmation and provider pickup instructions on your phone. Have a way to charge it. These are practical preparations, not a guarantee of service coverage.
Check any phone number requirement. Ask the school, employer or service requesting a number whether it must receive calls, SMS, or both. App messaging is not the same feature. Do not buy a voice plan solely because another traveller needed one.
At the airport

If your flight arrives late
A simple planning example: your flight lands at 20:30 and your selected counter closes at 21:00. That leaves only 30 minutes before accounting for immigration, baggage or moving between terminals. Treat this as a tight connection, not a reliable pickup plan. The times are illustrative; they are not the opening hours of a real counter.
Look for another collection date or route before ordering. If your temporary connection only provides data, remember that it will not fix an urgent voice-number requirement.
